The Need

The Opportunity

We have an incredible opportunity to remodel the 6,000 sq ft space in the lower level of the building where our high school is located. The remodel will feature a brand new, functional space with a tech room, large library, and multi-purpose room. We are excited that our pre-K to 6th grade students will once again be able to join our 7th - 12th grade students in the same building.

We have a wonderful partnership with Buenas Nuevas Church who is giving us free use of a perfectly suited building in the exact location we’ve been praying for.  And they are letting us do to it whatever we want to do. Our capital campaign is based on a remodel estimate that is far less than the 2 - 4 million dollars that would be needed to remodel the numerous other buildings in Hazleton that we have toured over the past 2 years. This is an opportunity that is a “no-brainer” and that we can’t turn away.

"We are winning on the fronts that matter."

  • Enrollment has grown from 80 - 150 students.

  • We are overcoming major cultural, educational, and language challenges.

  • Our staff and teachers are engaged in transformative relationships with our students, speaking Biblical truth and grace to the many dimensions of poverty that our students bring with them: financial, neurological, educational, relational, etc.

  • We hired a full-time Learning Support teacher, full and part-time tutors, and have Title I support as well.

  • We began an open, academic space where students can receive tutoring and learning support called the WOO space, which stands for WILL OVERCOME OBSTACLES.

We cannot, by necessity, be successful on our own – that is, having the funding we need. We can (and have) delivered on every other point, but we can’t serve under-resourced children and families solely on their dime. If we could, they wouldn’t be under-resourced children and families.

Ways to Give

  • Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) allows individuals and businesses to divert their Pennsylvania tax dollars to Immanuel Christian School. You may donate your money to ICS and you will receive a tax credit in return. It is not a deduction; it is a credit. There are several ways to approach this, and the process is simple.
We have a goal of securing $400,000 in EITC gifts for ICS.

  • Gifts of Cash may be made over a period of up to five years or as a one-time gift. Pledge payments will be arranged to best meet your needs.

  • Gifts of Appreciated Assets may provide tax advantages to you. Generally, an income tax deduction may be taken for the full fair market value of the gifted property and no capital gains tax will be due.

  • The IRA Charitable Rollover allows individuals who have reached the age of 70½ to donate up to $100,000 within each tax year directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to charitable organizations without treating the distribution(s) as taxable income.

  • Remembering Immanuel Christian School in Your Will is another way to participate. While estate gifts will not support current needs, they will leave a legacy that can provide for scholarships and innovative programs in the future. The staff will be pleased to discuss bequests and other planned gifts that meet your needs and interests.

  • Tribute Gifts may be made in honor or in memory of a loved one.

  • Corporate Matching Gifts from your employer may double or even triple your gift to Immanuel Christian School. Your employer’s human resources department can provide details and the matching gift form to include with your check.

We are a non-denominational, non-public, 501(c)(3), Pre-K-12 school. We are not a charter school, and we do not receive public funding, nor are we supported by a parish, diocese, or church denomination. YOUR GIFT MATTERS. Your gift will impact generations to come.

Capital Campaign

The Need

The children in Hazleton need ICS now more than ever before.

The unfortunate truth remains that, across the nation, for students from low income families (as well as for families of color), a subpar education has become the norm. The achievement gap between low income and high income families continues to widen. Unfortunately, our local city schools here in northeast Pennsylvania are not immune to this challenge. Hazleton, Scranton, Pittston, and others all have under-performing schools and many daily challenges. Students are falling through the cracks at an alarming rate.

At ICS, we are making it a priority to acclimate under-resourced children into our higher academic structure, while providing a Christian education that shapes them into students of integrity. Our staff-student ratio is small enough that we are relationally connected and can influence students' perception of the world toward Biblical truths such as "you are loved, you are worthy, you can overcome." It's these truths that provide them the security they need to navigate the world and make an impact for the betterment of society.

Our historical building on Locust St. was in need of repairs beyond what would be considered a sensible financial investment. Through the generosity of others, we were able to secure a loan and this past September 2019 we moved to beautifully remodeled educational space.

Every child, no matter what their family’s income, should have the opportunity to receive an excellent education. Founded in 1979, Immanuel Christian School celebrated its 40th year of providing students with an outstanding Christ-centered education. Please join us with your financial support and help us to continue to make an impact on the city of Hazleton.

The Opportunity

Come visit us!  See the newly remodeled 6,000 sq ft space in the lower level of the building where our high school was located. The remodel features a brand new, functional space with a large library and multi-purpose room. We are excited that our pre-K to 6th grade students are once again able to join our 7th - 12th grade students in the same building.

We have a wonderful partnership with Buenas Nuevas Church who is giving us free use of a perfectly suited building in the exact location we’ve been praying for. We paid for the remodel and in exchange, we have free rent for 10 years. Our remodel cost far less than the 2 - 4 million dollars that would be needed to remodel the numerous other buildings in Hazleton that we have toured over the past 2 years. This is an opportunity that is a “no-brainer” and that we couldn't turn away.  Now we need your help to pay down our loan. The sooner we pay that off, the sooner funds can be directed to more student scholarships.

Accomplishments

  • 1600% increase in EITC state tax credit financial partnership from local Hazleton businesses (we weren't getting very much at all and now we are getting a lot more!)

  • Our new need-based Indexed Tuition model has allowed us to serve more under-resourced families while adding significant stability to our budget

  • Enrollment is growing! Over the past 3 years we have gone from 80 students to 150. We used to have 2 grades per classroom; now each grade is in its own classroom.

  • We have implemented Friday half days so our staff can meet and brainstorm how to respond to the additional challenges we face as we reach into the city.

  • We have transitioned away from a school board to a policy governance model with a Board of Trustees.

  • We have a growing board with new members:

    • Aaron Tripp, Officer, Shepherd Press / ICS Board Chair

    • Nina DeCosmo, Attorney, Silverblatt & Associates

    • Pastor Mario Cordero, Mission Life Church/Hazleton

    • Diane Dutko, Chief Operating Officer, The Luzerne Foundation

    • Reyna Logsdon, Hispanic Outreach Coordinator, King's College

    • Sandy Insalaco, Sr., Chairman of the Board, U.S. Hydrations & Board Chair of Landmark Bank

    • David Walton, President, Push The Rock
